Purpose

This page lists every object of this kind that Setup Foundry changes, and what the change does. It is generated from the catalog and never edited by hand.

Notes

Connected User Experiences and Telemetry

This service manages the event-driven collection and transmission of Windows diagnostic and usage data. It also downloads configuration settings that control diagnostic data collection.

Effects of the change: The service cannot start at system startup or when requested by Windows or an application. Diagnostic events and diagnostic logs managed by DiagTrack therefore are not collected and transmitted through the service in the normal way. Settings that permit required or optional Windows diagnostic data cannot produce their intended effect through this component.

Device Management Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) Push message Routing Service

This service is part of the device-management platform in Windows 10 and Windows 11. It categorizes and processes incoming Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) messages, including Windows management messages and Service Indication or Service Loading messages. After authenticating received messages, it routes them to the appropriate Windows components.

Effects of the change: Manual startup means that the service is not started at system boot solely because of its startup type. Windows or an application can still start it on demand. Changing the startup configuration does not immediately stop an instance that is already running; the new configuration becomes relevant after the service stops or the computer starts again.

Windows Error Reporting Service

The Windows Error Reporting Service is part of Windows Error Reporting (WER). It processes reports about crashed or unresponsive applications and certain operating-system and driver failures. These reports support fault analysis and the delivery of known solutions when available.

Effects of the change: Changing the startup type does not by itself stop an instance that is already running. After a restart, the service is not kept running merely by an automatic startup setting. If Windows or an application requests the service for error reporting, it can still start and operate normally.

Program Compatibility Assistant Service

This service supports the Program Compatibility Assistant (PCA). PCA monitors installed and executed desktop programs for known compatibility problems. When Windows detects such a problem, the assistant can notify the user and recommend or apply appropriate compatibility settings.

Effects of the change: The service is not disabled. It is no longer started merely as an automatic-start service, but Windows components and applications can still request it through the Service Control Manager. Once started this way, Program Compatibility Assistant can generally operate normally.

Retail Demo Service

The service controls device activity while Windows is operating in retail demo mode, also known as the Retail Demo Experience (RDX). This mode is intended for display devices in retail stores. It presents the device and Windows through demonstration videos, sample content, and a dedicated Retail Demo app.

Effects of the change: With its startup type set to Disabled, the service cannot be started by Windows or on demand by an RDX component. Changing the startup type alone does not necessarily terminate an instance that is already running, but the service cannot start again after that instance ends.

Downloaded Maps Manager

Downloaded Maps Manager gives applications access to offline maps stored on the device. Applications can start the service on demand when they need these maps. Microsoft also describes a background function that keeps downloaded maps up to date.

Effects of the change: The service is not disabled. After Windows starts, it can remain stopped until the operating system or an application needs its mapping functionality. When requested, a service configured for Manual startup is still allowed to start, after which applications can continue to access downloaded maps.

WalletService

WalletService is a Windows system service that hosts runtime objects used by digital-wallet clients. It is not a standalone wallet application and does not provide its own user interface. Applications or Windows components can request the service when they need its wallet infrastructure.

Effects of the change: Manual is not the same as Disabled. The service does not have to remain running because of an automatic start, but Windows, an application, or an applicable service trigger can still start it when wallet functionality requires it. Its facilities are then available to the requesting clients.
