USB drive problems
What to do if the USB drive cannot be written to or the computer will not start from it.
since 0.9.7.6
No USB drive found
Causes
- Nothing suitable is connected.
- A card reader is connected but has no card in it. Many card readers appear only when a card is inserted.
- The drive is connected through a hub that has dropped out.
Solution
- Plug the drive into a USB port and click Refresh.
- Use a USB port directly on the computer rather than a hub.
- If Windows itself does not show the drive, try another USB port and then another drive.
Won’t fit
Causes
- The medium needs more room than the drive has. The message names how much is missing.
- Many applications were selected. Each application brings its own installer files.
Solution
- Use a larger drive.
- Select fewer applications and build the medium again.
- Build an ISO file instead of the drive if you do not need a drive.
Before building, Setup Foundry shows the line “Required space: …”. It tells you beforehand whether the drive is big enough.
The selected USB drive is no longer connected
Causes
- The USB port is loose, or the drive was moved.
- A hub dropped out during the write.
- Power management switched the USB port off.
Solution
- Connect the drive directly to the computer rather than through a hub, and refresh the list.
- Start the build again from the beginning. You cannot reuse or resume a half-written drive.
Missing: … Creation was canceled
Causes
- A part the medium needs is missing from the work folder. The message names it. It can be the setup program, the setup plan, the policy files, or the Office configuration, for example.
- A setup step was skipped, so the part was never produced.
Solution
- Go through the setup steps again so the missing part is produced.
- Build the medium again.
The build is aborted so that no half-finished medium is produced. Details are in the log.
When there is no message
-
The drive was written but does not boot. The target computer does not start from the drive. Check Secure Boot, the boot order, and the firmware boot menu, from which you may have to pick the drive. Test the same medium in the test machine. If it boots there, look at the target computer's firmware.
-
The drive does not appear in the boot menu as a UEFI entry. Since 0.9.8.4 the drive boots in UEFI mode only; an entry without "UEFI" does not start it, and it no longer offers a BIOS entry. Switch the computer's firmware to UEFI boot and turn off Legacy or CSM mode. The drive then appears as "UEFI:" followed by its name.
-
The build seems stuck on one step. The progress display names the step that is running. Copying the Windows files takes the longest. During that step, the display can stay unchanged for a long time.
For support
Provide the Setup Foundry version, the message word for word, the size and make of the drive, the result of the same medium in the test machine, when the error occurred, and the error log.
