Background picture and logo

One picture for the desktop, lock screen and setup of the finished Windows, with crop and your own logo in Pro.

since 0.9.8.5

Purpose

One picture replaces every background Windows ships with: desktop, lock screen, the pictures of the built-in themes and the touch keyboard backgrounds. The same picture sits behind the Install Assist and Windows Setup on the medium. Pro adds your own logo, placed into each of these pictures.

Availability

Free and Home: the Background picture page, picture only, no editor, no logo.

Pro: the Pictures & Logo page with the Image Preview editor for crop, zoom and logo.

Picture and logo belong to the installation profile currently set; in Pro, each profile has its own.

Steps

Free and Home:

  1. Open Background picture in the left rail.
  2. Click Choose background… and choose a file. The dialog opens in the Hintergrundbilder folder with the bundled pictures.
  3. Setup Foundry asks once: “Save this background picture? The output images are generated when you do.” Confirm with Save. If the profile already has a picture of its own, the question is “Replace the existing …?”, confirmed with Overwrite. Only after you confirm is the file copied and the picture set generated; Cancel changes nothing.

Pro:

  1. Open Pictures & Logo, click Open editor….
  2. Image alignment tab: Choose image… or Choose color… (a solid colour instead of a picture). Set the crop by dragging the picture, with Crop center horizontal / Crop center vertical, the Scaling anchor (nine fixed points) and Zoom (1x to 4x).
  3. Logo tab: Choose logo… (or Remove logo, then the pictures get no logo at all, not even the default one), then Position: (one of the four corners), Logo Size (%):, Horizontal margin (%):, Vertical margin (%):. You can also drag the logo in the picture.
  4. Save.

Everything in the editor is a preview only: picture, colour, logo, position, size, margins and crop change nothing in the profile and generate nothing. Only Save writes to the profile and generates the pictures. Closing discards: the window's X, the Esc key and Close throw away everything unsaved. If there are unsaved changes, the editor asks once, “Discard the changes?”.

In Pro, Current background on the page shows the finished picture with crop and logo, exactly as it goes onto the medium.

Result

After you confirm the save question (Free, Home) or after Save in the editor (Pro), Setup Foundry regenerates the picture set (Generating output images). It goes onto the next medium you create; media already created do not change.

In the finished Windows, the set replaces under C:\Windows\Web:

  • Wallpaper and 4K\Wallpaper: the desktop background in every resolution variant, plus the pictures of the built-in themes and of Spotlight
  • Screen: the lock screen
  • touchkeyboard: the touch keyboard backgrounds

On the medium: setup.bmp at 1024 × 768 in the boot image, the background of the Install Assist and Windows Setup. A logo appears there at twice its desktop size.

Pro: your own logo also lands on the machine as C:\Windows\OEM\logo.png, and the answer file names it as the setup logo (BrandIcon).

Notes

  • File formats: PNG, JPG, WebP. A PNG logo keeps its transparency.
  • Resolution: not checked. Every target picture is cropped and scaled from the source, so a small picture is scaled up. The largest generated picture is 6400 × 4000 pixels.
  • One crop for every format: the setting applies to all aspect ratios. Cropping in other aspect ratios shows 16:9, 16:10, 4:3, 21:9, 9:16 and 3:4.
  • Without a picture of your own, the medium gets Setup Foundry's default picture, the foundry. In Pro without a logo of your own, the Setup Foundry F mark goes into the picture.
  • Add taskbar padding adds 5 % of the picture height to the bottom margin of a logo in a bottom corner, so the taskbar does not cover it.
  • Setup Foundry copies the chosen file into the profile. Later changes to the original file have no effect.

If it does not work

  • “…: file not found.” The chosen file no longer exists. Choose it again.
  • “Could not save the ….” Copying into the profile failed. Check write permissions and free space.
  • “… must be between 1 and 100.” (Pro, editor): logo size and margins are percentages from 1 to 100.
  • “Save failed: …” (Pro, editor): the cause follows the colon.
  • No picture yet: the default picture is missing from disk as well. The Setup Foundry installation is incomplete.
