ISO import problems

What to do if a Windows ISO file cannot be read.

since 0.9.7.6

No file found at “…”

Causes

  1. The file was moved or renamed after you picked it.
  2. It is on a drive that is not connected at the moment.
  3. You typed the path by hand and it has a typo, often a trailing space.

Solution

  1. Pick the file again with Choose ISO….
  2. On an external drive, check that it is connected and still has the same drive letter.

The message names the path Setup Foundry looked for.

Not an .iso file

Causes

  1. The selection is an unpacked folder, not an ISO file.
  2. The selection is a WIM or ESD file. It belongs to a Windows source but is not a complete source.
  3. The file extension of an ISO file was changed.

Solution

  1. For an unpacked folder, use Choose folder… instead of Choose ISO….
  2. For a renamed ISO file, restore the .iso extension.
  3. For a WIM or ESD file, use a complete ISO file.

The message names the path of the selected file.

This Windows source is incomplete

Causes

  1. A copy was interrupted.
  2. The folder was moved while files were still being written into it.

Solution

  1. Copy the entire folder again from the original source.
  2. Or use the ISO file instead of the unpacked folder.

The message lists the missing files. Setup Foundry checks the source when you pick it, not only when you build.

The selected Windows version is for a different processor architecture than this PC

Causes

  1. The installation medium is meant for a computer with a different processor family.
  2. You picked the wrong image by mistake.

Solution

  1. Check which computer the installation medium is for. The comparison is against the computer you are working on, not against the target computer.
  2. Pick the matching image if the medium is for this computer.
  3. Continue if the medium is for a different computer. Setup Foundry shows a warning here and does not stop the wizard.

When there is no message

  • The retail download delivers no file. The retail download is an extra with no guarantees: Microsoft can change or block the interface behind it at any time. The Microsoft product catalog and importing an ISO file you already have keep working regardless.
  • The import seems to do nothing. The import runs when you finish the wizard, not while you are picking.

For support

Provide the Setup Foundry version, the message word for word, the path used, the kind of source (ISO file or unpacked folder), when the error occurred, and the error log.
