Retail Demo Service
The service controls device activity while Windows is operating in retail demo mode, also known as the Retail Demo Experience (RDX).
since 0.9.8.11
Purpose
Identifier: RetailDemo
Setup Foundry sets this service’s startup type to Disabled.
The service controls device activity while Windows is operating in retail demo mode, also known as the Retail Demo Experience (RDX). This mode is intended for display devices in retail stores. It presents the device and Windows through demonstration videos, sample content, and a dedicated Retail Demo app.
RDX also restores a predefined presentation state and cleans up data created while shoppers use the device. Microsoft does not document which of these operations are performed exclusively by the RetailDemo service and which are handled by other RDX components.
Notes
Additional effects
The Retail Demo app, the repeating attract loop, and RDX-enabled apps are parts of the same demonstration environment. RDX can obtain sample assets through Microsoft Store and, after a shopper stops interacting with the device, close apps, delete files from known user folders, and clear local and roaming application state.
According to Microsoft’s service description, RetailDemo does not provide a general Windows function when the device is outside retail demo mode.
Privacy and security
The RDX cleanup process is designed to prevent the next shopper from seeing files and application data left by a previous user. On a demonstration device, this can include captured photos and videos, downloads, documents, and local application state.
Microsoft does not document separate personal-data uploads or a dedicated diagnostic-data flow for the RetailDemo service itself. RDX assets can nevertheless be delivered online through Microsoft Store. Disabling this service does not generally block Microsoft Store connections or Windows diagnostic-data transmission.
On a device that is actually used for retail demonstrations, loss of RDX coordination may leave shopper-created content without the intended cleanup. Microsoft does not publicly document the exact division of cleanup responsibilities between RetailDemo and the other RDX components.
Effects of the change
With its startup type set to Disabled, the service cannot be started by Windows or on demand by an RDX component. Changing the startup type alone does not necessarily terminate an instance that is already running, but the service cannot start again after that instance ends.
No visible change is expected on a normally configured PC that is not in retail demo mode.
On a retail display device, however, the Retail Demo Experience can no longer be controlled reliably. Automatic return to the presentation, restoration of sample content, and cleanup between shoppers may fail or remain incomplete. Microsoft does not document the exact error message or fallback behavior produced by current Windows versions in this condition.
Notes
The service is distinct from the Retail Demo app and the installed RDX content packages. Disabling the service does not remove those components.
