XblGameSaveTask

Microsoft describes `XblGameSaveTask` as the Xbox Live GameSave standby task.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Identifier: \Microsoft\XblGameSave\XblGameSaveTask

Setup Foundry leaves this task enabled by default and disables it only if you explicitly select it in the list.

Microsoft describes XblGameSaveTask as the Xbox Live GameSave standby task. It belongs to the Windows Xbox Live components and supports background processing associated with Xbox game saves. Games that use the feature store save data locally and can synchronize it with Xbox cloud storage, allowing players to continue their progress on another device.

Microsoft does not publish a detailed account of the task's internal operations or every trigger that may start it. The task is therefore distinct from the XblGameSave service, which provides the actual upload and download of save data for Xbox Live-enabled games.

Notes

Additional effects

Microsoft lists XblGameSaveTask as a scheduled task related to Xbox Live Auth Manager (XblAuthManager). That service supplies authentication and authorization services for Xbox Live interactions.

The XblGameSave service and the separate \Microsoft\XblGameSave\XblGameSaveTaskLogon task may also participate in game-save processing. Disabling XblGameSaveTask does not disable either of those components.

Privacy and security

The Xbox game-save system processes save data created by supported games. Depending on the title, this can include game progress, preferences, and other information placed in save containers by the game. Game and Microsoft or Xbox account identifiers are also used to associate and authenticate cloud-save operations. When cloud saving is active, save data is uploaded to and downloaded from Microsoft's Xbox services.

Disabling this task prevents the background processing initiated by the task. It does not demonstrably stop every transfer of game saves or other Xbox data: a game, the XblGameSave service, or another Xbox component can still initiate its own synchronization or sign-in activity.

Effects of the change

As long as you do not select the task in Setup Foundry, it remains enabled and Windows behavior does not change.

If you explicitly select the task, Setup Foundry disables it. Its registration remains in Task Scheduler, but its triggers no longer start it. The standby or background processing assigned to this task consequently does not take place.

Disabling the task does not delete existing local saves or saves already stored in the cloud. Depending on the game and Windows version, background handling of Xbox saves may be delayed or skipped. A game might initially see an older cloud copy or defer synchronization until the next launch, when another Xbox component can perform it. Because the other Xbox tasks and services remain unchanged, disabling this one task cannot be assumed to disable cloud saves completely.

Games that do not use Xbox game-save integration and ordinary Windows features should not be directly affected. Microsoft does not document a complete set of task-specific error messages or effects for individual games.

Notes

Microsoft includes this task in its disablement guidance for Windows Server 2016 with Desktop Experience when the server is not being used as an end-user desktop that requires Xbox functionality. That server-specific guidance is not a general statement that the task is unnecessary on a gaming PC.
