BackgroundUploadTask
This task belongs to the Windows SettingSync infrastructure.
since 0.9.8.11
Purpose
Identifier: \Microsoft\Windows\SettingSync\BackgroundUploadTask
Setup Foundry disables this scheduled task; the task remains installed.
This task belongs to the Windows SettingSync infrastructure. On Windows versions that include it, the task invokes a delayed background upload for settings synchronization. It processes locally queued changes to eligible Windows settings and, on supported Windows versions, roaming data maintained by packaged apps, sending them to the associated Microsoft cloud service.
It is not a general-purpose file uploader or a Windows diagnostic-data task. The enabled Windows synchronization features and individual apps determine which settings or app data are eligible for synchronization.
Notes
Additional effects
On Windows 10, other devices used by the same account can receive the uploaded settings and app data. Apps using the Windows roaming-data store may use this mechanism to synchronize preferences, favorites, state information, or small app-specific files between devices.
Disabling this one task does not change the Windows settings-sync policies or the corresponding options shown in Settings. Other tasks and components involved in synchronization or backup remain unaffected.
Privacy and security
When synchronization is enabled, the task can transfer settings and app-specific roaming data to Microsoft so that the data can be associated with the signed-in account and made available on other devices. This service data is distinct from Windows diagnostic data.
Once the task is disabled, uploads that depend exclusively on this task are no longer initiated. The change does not delete data that has already been stored by Microsoft, and it does not prevent other Windows features, tasks, or apps from communicating with Microsoft.
Effects of the change
The task remains registered in Task Scheduler, but its triggers and system requests can no longer start it. Users normally do not see an immediate error message.
On Windows 10, changes that depend on this task's delayed upload may reach the cloud and other devices late or not at all. The local settings and app data remain available on the current device. Because Setup Foundry disables only this task, the change does not guarantee that all settings synchronization stops; other synchronization paths may continue to operate.
Microsoft no longer supports roaming app data through ApplicationData.RoamingSettings or ApplicationData.RoamingFolder as of Windows 11, so the task no longer has the same app-roaming role there. The current Windows settings backup and restore feature uses a separate scheduled backup process, and Microsoft does not document BackgroundUploadTask as that feature's backup task.
Disabling the task does not erase local settings, remove existing cloud copies, or delete the task. No material system-wide performance improvement is documented.
Notes
Microsoft does not publish a dedicated reference describing this task's complete trigger set and payload. Its presence and practical effect can therefore vary with the Windows version and the synchronization model in use.
