Setup Foundry can remove this package from existing user accounts and from provisioning for new accounts; it is not removed by default.
Xbox Game Speech Window provides the system text window used by supported Xbox and Windows games. Games can use it to display transcribed voice chat, captions, or text chat over the game. The window can show a speaker name and a microphone or keyboard icon alongside the supplied text.
The package does not produce the transcription itself. It receives text that a game or chat component has already supplied and renders it in the system-provided overlay. It is used only by games that integrate the relevant Xbox or Game Accessibility APIs.
Notes
Additional effects
The overlay is an accessibility feature for players who cannot hear spoken chat or have difficulty hearing it. Supported games may use this system window or implement their own conversation display. Games that render a custom interface do not depend on the package for displaying their transcriptions.
Privacy and security
The window processes the text being displayed and, where supplied, the associated speaker name. This content can include transcribed speech, captions, and text-chat messages.
Microsoft's documentation does not identify a separate network transmission performed by this display component. Upstream speech transcription or online voice chat may nevertheless use network services. Removing the package therefore does not reliably prevent those data transfers; it removes only the associated system text display.
Effects of the change
After removal, the system speech-to-text overlay may no longer appear in games that use it, or the calling feature may be unable to open the window. Affected players may consequently lose real-time voice-chat transcriptions and any captions or chat text presented through this interface. This particularly affects accessibility for players who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Removing the package does not itself remove the Xbox app, Xbox Game Bar, audio output, or voice chat. Whether speech continues to be transcribed depends on the individual game and chat implementation. Games that render transcriptions in their own interface are not affected by the absence of the system overlay.
The package does not provide conventional document, media, or protocol associations. Its removal therefore does not leave ordinary file-type associations or user-facing Start menu shortcuts without a handler.
Notes
Xbox Game Speech Window is a preinstalled supporting component and is not documented as a separately searchable Microsoft Store app. It can be obtained from the Store later only if Microsoft offers the package there or distributes it with a related Xbox component.
