Prevent users from moving their Windows known folders to OneDrive

The `KFMBlockOptIn` DWORD value set to `1` prevents users from moving their Windows **Desktop**, **Documents**, and **Pictures** folders to a OneDrive account through OneDrive Known Folder Move.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Show registry keys (1)
  • HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\OneDrive\KFMBlockOptIn

The KFMBlockOptIn DWORD value set to 1 prevents users from moving their Windows Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders to a OneDrive account through OneDrive Known Folder Move.

The restriction applies to all OneDrive accounts on the computer. Moving known folders to personal OneDrive accounts is already blocked independently on domain-joined PCs.

Notes

Additional effects

With the value set to 1, OneDrive does not prompt users to protect their important folders, and the command for managing folder backup is disabled.

Known folders that were moved before the value took effect are not redirected back to the device. Their existing files remain in OneDrive.

Security

This value can prevent users from transferring the contents of Desktop, Documents, and Pictures to a OneDrive account through Known Folder Move. It does not disable OneDrive, ordinary file synchronization, or other methods of uploading files. It therefore does not provide a general restriction on transferring data to OneDrive.

Possible side effects

Users cannot place their known folders within the protection and synchronization scope provided by OneDrive Known Folder Move. Files in folders that have not already been moved remain at their existing locations and are not synchronized by this feature.

Notes

The registry value name KFMBlockOptIn differs from the Microsoft policy name BlockKnownFolderMove.

The behavior described here applies specifically to the DWORD value 1. A value of 2 has broader behavior: it enables the restriction and redirects previously moved known folders back to the user's device.

This setting has no effect when either Prompt users to move Windows known folders to OneDrive or Silently move Windows known folders to OneDrive is enabled.
