ModelCachingUpdate

This is an internal maintenance task associated with the Click to Do model cache on Copilot+ PCs.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Identifier: \Microsoft\Windows\WindowsAI\ClickToDo\ModelCachingUpdate

Setup Foundry disables this scheduled task; the task remains registered, but its triggers no longer start it.

This is an internal maintenance task associated with the Click to Do model cache on Copilot+ PCs. Its name indicates that it initiates an update of that cache, where Windows keeps local AI models or data prepared for their use by the feature.

When invoked by the user, Click to Do examines the visible screen and offers actions for recognized text and images. Some of its intelligent text actions use the locally running Phi Silica language model.

Microsoft does not publish task-specific documentation for ModelCachingUpdate. Its triggers and the exact operations covered by “model caching update” are therefore not publicly defined. It cannot be established reliably whether an individual run downloads models, validates existing model data, or only prepares the local cache.

Notes

Additional effects

Windows AI components are serviced separately through Windows Update. ModelCachingUpdate is not Windows Update itself, however. Disabling it prevents this particular task from running; it does not by itself stop other servicing paths or disable the other scheduled tasks under the ClickToDo folder.

Privacy and security

Microsoft documents no separate transmission of data for this task, and there is no evidence that it uploads screenshots or user-selected content. Click to Do performs its screen analysis locally and starts that analysis only while the user is actively engaging with the feature.

Disabling the task does not alter the data handling that applies when Click to Do is used later. An online action can still send the selected content to its provider—for example, to Bing for a web or visual search. Windows also collects some diagnostic data to keep Click to Do secure, current, and operational.

Effects of the change

The task remains in Task Scheduler, but while disabled it cannot run in response to its configured triggers. Existing AI components and cached model data are not removed. This change also does not turn off Click to Do as a Windows feature; Windows provides a separate setting and policy for that purpose.

There may consequently be no immediate, visible difference. If Windows later needs to refresh the cache for a new or modified AI component, the update pass assigned to this task will not occur. Click to Do may continue working when suitable cached data is already available. If a required model is absent or not ready, however, the affected local AI capability may remain unavailable or report that further preparation is required.

Microsoft does not specify a guaranteed error message or confirm that another mechanism will compensate for every skipped run. Disabling this task alone is therefore not documented as a reliable way to disable Click to Do completely.

Notes

This task and Click to Do are associated with recent Windows 11 releases on supported Copilot+ PCs. The task may not exist on older Windows builds or ineligible hardware.
