ModelCachingIdle

`ModelCachingIdle` is an internal Windows task in the Click to Do branch of Task Scheduler.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Identifier: \Microsoft\Windows\WindowsAI\ClickToDo\ModelCachingIdle

Setup Foundry disables this scheduled task; the task remains registered, but its trigger no longer starts it.

ModelCachingIdle is an internal Windows task in the Click to Do branch of Task Scheduler. Its path and registered name identify it as an idle-time maintenance path for the local model cache. Microsoft does not publicly document this individual task in detail, so its exact cache operations and complete trigger conditions are not reliably specified.

Click to Do examines text and images on the current screen on supported devices and offers relevant actions. Some intelligent text actions use an AI model that runs locally. The task is associated with background maintenance of the supporting model resources; it does not perform the screen analysis for an active Click to Do session itself.

Notes

Additional effects

The task belongs to the model infrastructure used by Click to Do. Disabling this one task does not uninstall the AI components, remove their existing data, or turn off Click to Do as a feature. Windows can continue to service model components through other maintenance and update mechanisms.

Privacy and security

Microsoft documents no separate data transmission for ModelCachingIdle. Click to Do normally performs screen analysis and AI processing locally. Selected content is sent to an online provider only when the user explicitly chooses an applicable action, such as web search or visual search. Microsoft also states that some diagnostic data can be collected to keep the component secure, current, and operational.

Disabling the task only prevents its scheduled idle run. It does not disable local screen analysis, diagnostic-data collection, or transfers initiated through user-selected online actions.

Effects of the change

The task is not deleted, but its idle-time maintenance no longer runs through this task path. Installed models and existing cache files are not automatically removed.

Click to Do can remain available as long as its required components are prepared through other mechanisms. If this task is needed to prepare or refresh a model cache and no other maintenance path compensates for it, the first use after a component update may take longer or may be temporarily delayed while Windows makes the required model resources ready by another route. The public Microsoft documentation does not establish a specific error message or confirm that disabling this task always causes the feature to fail.

On systems where Click to Do is unavailable or the required Windows AI components are not supported, disabling the task is not expected to have an immediate effect on unrelated Windows features. It does not guarantee a lasting reduction in storage use because it removes neither the model nor the existing cache.

Notes

Microsoft lists Click to Do as applying to Copilot+ PCs and certain eligible Cloud PCs. The task may therefore be absent or managed differently depending on the Windows release, hardware, and deployed Windows AI components. Microsoft provides no separate technical reference for ModelCachingIdle, so more specific claims about its internal behavior cannot be verified from the published documentation.
