HiveUploadTask
HiveUploadTask is part of the Windows User Profile Service infrastructure.
since 0.9.8.11
Purpose
Identifier: \Microsoft\Windows\User Profile Service\HiveUploadTask
Setup Foundry disables this scheduled task; the task remains registered in Task Scheduler.
HiveUploadTask is part of the Windows User Profile Service infrastructure. When the associated roaming-profile policy is enabled, it performs a scheduled background upload of the signed-in user's registry hive (NTUSER.DAT) to the configured network profile location. The schedule can use either a recurring interval or a specified time of day.
The hive contains the per-user registry settings exposed under HKEY_CURRENT_USER, including Windows and application configuration. This task does not upload documents or other profile files. It has no function for ordinary local profiles without a configured roaming-profile path.
Notes
Privacy and security
The destination is the roaming-profile file share selected by the organization or system administrator. HiveUploadTask is not a telemetry task and does not send the registry hive to Microsoft.
Disabling the task stops its scheduled background copies of NTUSER.DAT. It does not prevent the normal roaming-profile synchronization performed at sign-out, so user-specific Windows and application settings can still be stored on the profile server.
Effects of the change
There is no practical change for local profiles or for roaming profiles whose background upload policy is not configured.
If scheduled background uploading is configured, changes under HKEY_CURRENT_USER are no longer copied to the profile share while the user remains signed in. They stay on the current computer until the normal profile synchronization at sign-out.
This matters most for long-running sessions or users who rarely sign out. If the user signs in on another computer before the current session has synchronized, or if the session ends without a successful profile upload, the server-side registry hive may be older. Recent Windows or application settings may consequently be missing from the roaming profile.
The task is not removed. Disabling it does not stop the User Profile Service, disable roaming profiles as a whole, or prevent other profile data from being synchronized by their respective mechanisms.
Notes
Microsoft documents the underlying background-upload operation and its scheduling parameters, but does not provide a dedicated Microsoft Learn article for HiveUploadTask itself.
