SustainabilityTelemetry
This Windows system task invokes the task action implemented by `EcoScoreTask.dll`.
since 0.9.8.11
Purpose
Identifier: \Microsoft\Windows\Sustainability\SustainabilityTelemetry
Setup Foundry disables this scheduled task; the task remains installed, but its triggers no longer start it.
This Windows system task invokes the task action implemented by EcoScoreTask.dll. It belongs to the sustainability components included with newer Windows 11 releases and processes diagnostic information related to the device’s energy efficiency. Microsoft’s public documentation does not provide a task-specific description of its triggers or event schema.
It is distinct from \Microsoft\Windows\Sustainability\PowerGridForecastTask. That task supplies electricity-grid carbon-intensity information for carbon-aware Windows features, whereas SustainabilityTelemetry is associated with diagnostics or assessment.
Notes
Privacy and security
Microsoft lists power and battery information among the data that Windows diagnostics can contain. Examples include power consumption by the CPU, GPU, and display; screen-off and sleep periods; thermal throttling; battery drain; time on AC versus battery power; and battery-state transitions. Diagnostic events can also carry common fields such as the operating-system version, a device identifier, the collection time, and the component that logged the event.
The public documentation does not attribute those individual fields specifically to SustainabilityTelemetry. It therefore does not establish exactly which fields this task processes or transmits, or how its activity varies with the configured diagnostic-data level.
Disabling the task prevents new scheduled runs and consequently prevents diagnostic events produced exclusively by those runs. It does not stop other Windows components or scheduled tasks from collecting and sending diagnostic data to Microsoft.
Effects of the change
Task Scheduler no longer invokes EcoScoreTask.dll through this task’s registered triggers. The task definition and its system library are not deleted and can remain visible in Task Scheduler and the Windows component store.
The task has no user interface of its own. Disabling it therefore does not remove Energy recommendations, power settings, or shortcuts. It also does not directly turn off carbon-aware Windows Update scheduling, which uses other sustainability components.
Microsoft publishes no supported dependency list for SustainabilityTelemetry. It is therefore unclear whether any local sustainability measurement that consumes its output remains unchanged or stops being refreshed. There is also no documented performance or battery-life improvement; only this task’s brief background executions are avoided.
Notes
The task is not present in every Windows release. Windows component and feature updates can change its definition or enabled state.
