SynchronizeWithStorage

`SynchronizeWithStorage` belongs to the legacy Windows settings-roaming infrastructure used by Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Identifier: \Microsoft\Windows\Live\Roaming\SynchronizeWithStorage

Setup Foundry disables this scheduled task; the task remains present, but its triggers no longer start it.

SynchronizeWithStorage belongs to the legacy Windows settings-roaming infrastructure used by Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. When invoked, the task checks whether synchronization is required and performs it if necessary.

On Windows 8.1, settings synchronization relied on a Microsoft account. Depending on the enabled synchronization groups, Windows settings and data from supported apps could be transferred between the PC and the Microsoft cloud service associated with that account.

Notes

Additional effects

The task supports carrying eligible settings between devices. Depending on the Windows version and configuration, these could include themes, language preferences, app settings, Wi-Fi passwords, web credentials, and Internet Explorer favorites.

This task is distinct from the newer tasks under \Microsoft\Windows\SettingSync\. Microsoft documents a newer synchronization architecture and different account and management models for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Privacy and security

When settings synchronization is configured, the task processes Windows settings and app data selected for roaming and can upload them to, or retrieve them from, the cloud service associated with the primary Microsoft account. The specific data involved depends on the enabled synchronization groups and supported apps.

Disabling the task prevents the synchronization pass initiated by this task. It does not delete data already stored locally or in the Microsoft cloud. Microsoft does not document this legacy task as the only possible synchronization path, so disabling it is not equivalent to applying a system-wide policy that turns off settings synchronization.

Effects of the change

The task is no longer launched automatically by its configured triggers. On a system that still uses this legacy roaming infrastructure, the check and any subsequent synchronization normally performed by SynchronizeWithStorage therefore do not take place.

Changes to supported Windows or app settings might consequently appear late on other devices or might not appear there at all. Likewise, changes made on another device are not brought to this PC through this task run. Local settings remain in place; the task is not deleted, and previously synchronized data is not reset.

Other synchronization components and newer Windows mechanisms can remain active. On current or upgraded installations, disabling this task alone therefore cannot reliably be described as stopping all settings synchronization. No material performance improvement is documented; only the occasional execution of this task handler and its possible network activity are avoided.

Notes

This task originates from the Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 generation. Current Microsoft documentation for Windows 10 and Windows 11 no longer identifies this task path as part of the modern settings-sync architecture. The task may be absent from a current clean installation, while an upgraded system may retain a legacy entry. Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 are no longer supported by Microsoft.
