UsageDataReporting

`UsageDataReporting` belongs to Windows' internal feature-configuration system.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Identifier: \Microsoft\Windows\Flighting\FeatureConfig\UsageDataReporting

Setup Foundry disables this scheduled task; the task remains installed, but its triggers no longer start it.

UsageDataReporting belongs to Windows' internal feature-configuration system. The task processes reporting data for features that Windows enables, disables, or delivers in different variants through controlled rollouts or cloud-provided configurations.

Microsoft documents diagnostic events in this area that contain feature, flight, and variant identifiers, feature-state changes, and information about the use of cloud-delivered configurations. Microsoft can use this data to compare the usage and quality of a deployed feature across different device groups.

Notes

Additional effects

The task is one member of a group under \Microsoft\Windows\Flighting\FeatureConfig. Other tasks in that group can continue to retrieve or reconcile feature configurations and process cached data. Disabling UsageDataReporting therefore does not disable the entire Windows feature-configuration system or automatically reverse features that are already enabled.

Privacy and security

The associated diagnostic category can include identifiers for the feature, rollout, or experiment; the assigned state or variant; and the time of a state change. Diagnostic events also contain common device and configuration data. Whether this information is transmitted depends on the Windows version, the device's diagnostic-data configuration, and which events are generated.

Disabling the task prevents reporting initiated by this task from running. Other Windows components and scheduled tasks can still collect and transmit required or optional diagnostic data to Microsoft. The change therefore does not disable Windows diagnostic-data transmission as a whole.

Effects of the change

The task remains registered in Task Scheduler, but its configured triggers no longer run it. No immediate user-interface change is expected during normal use. Merely disabling this reporting task does not remove features that are already enabled or erase locally stored feature configurations.

Microsoft no longer receives the corresponding usage and status reports through this task's execution. Measurement data from this device may consequently be incomplete for controlled feature rollouts. Microsoft does not publicly document whether the absence of this individual task affects the later assignment, retention, or rollback of any particular feature, so a specific loss of Windows functionality cannot be stated reliably.

Other feature-configuration tasks and the general Windows diagnostic pipeline remain operational. In particular, this change does not inherently prevent Windows from receiving new configurations or features through Windows Update or other servicing mechanisms.

Notes

Microsoft does not publish a dedicated task reference that fully describes the triggers and internal processing of UsageDataReporting. Its relationship to feature configuration is established by its task path and Microsoft's documentation of Feature Quality and Feature Tuning diagnostic events. The set of installed tasks can vary between Windows versions and servicing levels.
