BootstrapUsageDataReporting
This task belongs to the Windows feature-configuration and controlled-feature-rollout subsystem.
since 0.9.8.11
Purpose
Identifier: \Microsoft\Windows\Flighting\FeatureConfig\BootstrapUsageDataReporting
Setup Foundry disables this scheduled task; the task remains present but is no longer launched by its triggers.
This task belongs to the Windows feature-configuration and controlled-feature-rollout subsystem. Its technical name indicates that it bootstraps usage-data reporting for feature configurations. Microsoft does not publish a task-specific description that identifies its exact triggers, processing sequence, or complete reporting payload.
Microsoft’s Windows diagnostic-data reference documents events in this area that can contain feature, flight, and variant identifiers, current states, and state-change times. Microsoft can use such data to evaluate the use and quality of cloud-delivered configurations and compare treatment and control devices during controlled rollouts. The documentation does not explicitly attribute those individual events to this task.
Notes
Privacy and security
Feature-configuration diagnostic events can transmit technical identifiers for affected features and cloud-delivered configurations, together with their state and the time of a state change, to Microsoft. Microsoft classifies some corresponding events as required diagnostic data.
Disabling the task prevents its configured triggers from initiating this reporting bootstrap. It does not stop Windows from collecting or transmitting all feature and diagnostic data: other scheduled tasks and Windows components can still generate related events and submit them through the Windows diagnostic-data infrastructure. Microsoft does not document what measurable portion of diagnostic traffic, if any, is attributable solely to BootstrapUsageDataReporting.
Effects of the change
The task remains registered in Task Scheduler, but its configured triggers no longer run it. Consequently, the initial setup or activation of usage-data reporting for Windows feature configurations might not occur through this task.
Microsoft documents no immediate change to the Windows user interface. In particular, this change does not disable Windows Update or every feature delivered through a controlled rollout. Other tasks under \Microsoft\Windows\Flighting\FeatureConfig\ can continue to retrieve, reconcile, or process feature configurations.
Microsoft does not state whether preventing this task from running affects controlled-feature-rollout assignment or evaluation on particular Windows releases. The most supportable expected effect is less complete reporting about the use and state of feature configurations; the published documentation does not establish that a specific user-facing feature will stop working.
Notes
Microsoft provides no dedicated public reference for BootstrapUsageDataReporting. Its role and possible effects therefore can only be bounded by its unambiguous task path and technical name, together with Microsoft’s documentation for the associated feature-configuration diagnostic events. The set and behavior of tasks in this area can change between Windows builds and cumulative updates.
