Device User
This task is part of the Windows diagnostic component that gathers device information.
since 0.9.8.11
Purpose
Identifier: \Microsoft\Windows\Device Information\Device User
Setup Foundry disables this scheduled task.
This task is part of the Windows diagnostic component that gathers device information. In its usual definition, a user sign-in triggers the task, which starts DeviceCensus.exe with the UserCxt argument. This initiates the user-context portion of the device and configuration inventory used for diagnostic, compatibility, and update-related purposes.
It is distinct from the similarly named \Microsoft\Windows\Device Information\Device task, which performs collection in the system context. Disabling Device User does not alter that separate task.
Notes
Privacy and security
Microsoft’s documentation for Census diagnostic events lists data such as the Windows version and configuration, hardware and firmware properties, installed components, device identifiers, networking capabilities, and the states of privacy settings. Microsoft uses required diagnostic data to identify compatibility problems and help keep Windows secure, current, and operating correctly.
Microsoft does not publish a complete mapping showing which individual Census fields are collected exclusively by Device User and which are obtained by other diagnostic components. This task initiates collection in the user context; subsequent handling and transmission of diagnostic events are performed by the Windows diagnostic infrastructure according to the configured diagnostic-data level.
Disabling the task prevents its sign-in-triggered collection run. It does not disable Windows diagnostic data as a whole: the Device task, other scheduled tasks, and additional diagnostic components can continue to collect and transmit data.
Effects of the change
Once disabled, Device User is no longer started by its sign-in trigger. The task remains registered in Task Scheduler. Merely disabling it does not necessarily terminate an instance of DeviceCensus.exe that is already running.
Microsoft does not document any user-facing Windows feature as depending exclusively on this task, so users will generally see no immediate interface change. The user-context inventory normally performed at sign-in will no longer run, however. Diagnostic and compatibility information available to Microsoft may consequently be less complete or less current.
Disabling the task does not remove devices or drivers and does not turn off Windows Update. It also does not guarantee that particular information will never reach Microsoft, because other diagnostic events and system components can collect the same or similar information.
Notes
Available diagnostic events and fields vary by Windows version and can change through Windows updates. Microsoft documents the Census event family but does not provide an exact field-level mapping for the individual Device User task. More specific effects attributable solely to this task therefore cannot be stated reliably.
