Device
This Windows system task initiates a device inventory.
since 0.9.8.11
Purpose
Identifier: \Microsoft\Windows\Device Information\Device
Setup Foundry disables this scheduled task; the task remains installed, but its triggers no longer start it.
This Windows system task initiates a device inventory. Windows examines technical characteristics of the computer and its configuration, which contribute to diagnostic events in the “Census” group.
Depending on the Windows version, this information can include the hardware model and manufacturer, firmware, processor and memory characteristics, storage devices, security capabilities such as TPM, the operating-system version, update configuration, and domain or MDM enrollment details. Microsoft uses this type of data, among other purposes, to assess device compatibility and update readiness and to help keep Windows secure and up to date.
This task is separate from Device Manager, device installation, and the similarly named \Microsoft\Windows\Device Information\Device User task.
Notes
Privacy and security
The device inventory can produce device identifiers and detailed information about the hardware and system configuration. Transmission is handled through the Windows diagnostic infrastructure rather than by Task Scheduler alone.
Disabling the task prevents future inventory runs initiated by this task’s triggers. It does not delete information that has already been collected. Other diagnostic events, inventory mechanisms, and connections to Microsoft remain unchanged and may continue to collect or transmit device information.
Effects of the change
The task remains visible in Task Scheduler, but its configured triggers no longer start it. Consequently, the device inventory initiated by this task is no longer refreshed on its normal schedule.
There is no immediate user-interface change during ordinary use: installed devices and drivers continue to work, Device Manager remains available, and Windows Update is not turned off. Microsoft does, however, identify device inventory data as an input for compatibility testing and for determining whether a device is suitable for updates. Without new runs of this task, the inventory available for those purposes may become outdated or incomplete. Microsoft does not document a consistent effect on the delivery or timing of individual updates across all Windows versions.
Disabling this task does not stop all Windows diagnostic data or every device and update compatibility assessment. Other Windows components can collect similar information independently.
Notes
Microsoft does not publish a dedicated functional reference for this specific task. The scope and fields of the associated Census diagnostic events vary between Windows releases. Feature updates or repair installations may also recreate built-in tasks or change their enabled state.
