UsbCeip

UsbCeip is part of the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP).

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Identifier: \Microsoft\Windows\Customer Experience Improvement Program\UsbCeip

Setup Foundry disables this scheduled task.

UsbCeip is part of the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP). When the task is triggered and the computer is enrolled in CEIP, it collects USB usage statistics and information about the computer. Microsoft uses this data to improve the reliability, stability, and overall functionality of USB support in Windows.

According to the task description supplied with Windows, the task performs no collection or transmission when the user has not consented to Windows CEIP participation. Its precise trigger configuration can vary between Windows versions and system images.

Notes

Privacy and security

When CEIP participation is active, UsbCeip sends USB-related usage statistics and computer information to Microsoft. Microsoft describes CEIP more broadly as collecting information about hardware configuration and the use of Windows software and services. The available Microsoft documentation does not provide a field-by-field inventory of the data processed specifically by UsbCeip.

Disabling the task prevents its future collection and transmission runs. It does not delete diagnostic data that may already exist. It also does not disable other CEIP components or the wider Windows diagnostic data system.

Effects of the change

The task remains registered in Task Scheduler, but its configured triggers no longer start it. This USB-specific CEIP component therefore stops supplying new usage statistics to Microsoft.

USB devices, USB controllers, and their drivers continue to operate. UsbCeip is a telemetry task, not part of the data path Windows uses to detect or operate USB hardware. Users should therefore see no change in the normal operation of connected USB devices.

Disabling this task does not opt the computer out of Windows CEIP as a whole and does not alter higher-level diagnostic or privacy policies. Other components may continue to collect diagnostic and usage data when permitted by their applicable Windows settings and policies.
