KernelCeipTask

KernelCeipTask is part of the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP).

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Identifier: \Microsoft\Windows\Customer Experience Improvement Program\KernelCeipTask

Setup Foundry disables this scheduled task; the task remains installed, but its triggers no longer start it.

KernelCeipTask is part of the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP). Its Windows task description states that it collects additional system information and sends the data to Microsoft when the user has consented to participate in Windows CEIP. If the user has not consented, the task does nothing.

Microsoft describes CEIP more broadly as collecting information about hardware configuration and the use of software and services to identify usage patterns and trends. Public Microsoft documentation does not specify the individual data fields collected specifically by KernelCeipTask.

Notes

Additional effects

KernelCeipTask is only one component of CEIP. Disabling it does not change the system-wide CEIP preference or the Windows diagnostic-data configuration. Other scheduled tasks, services, or applications can therefore continue to collect and transmit diagnostic or usage data.

Privacy and security

When CEIP participation is enabled, disabling the task prevents future collection and transmission performed by this particular job. Microsoft states that CEIP reports do not contain contact information such as a person's name, address, or telephone number. They can, however, contain technical information about hardware configuration and the use of Windows, software, and services.

Disabling the task does not delete data that has already been collected or sent to Microsoft.

Effects of the change

The additional system-data collection assigned to KernelCeipTask no longer occurs because the task is not started by its configured triggers. Disabling the task does not necessarily terminate an instance that is already running.

Users do not lose a visible Windows feature. The change removes this task's contribution to the CEIP data Microsoft uses to analyze usage patterns and improve its products. Diagnostic transmissions handled by separate tasks or services are unaffected. Microsoft documentation does not establish a measurable performance improvement from disabling this task.

Notes

KernelCeipTask belongs to the older CEIP implementation and is primarily associated with Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and corresponding Windows Server releases. Depending on the Windows version and installation history, it may not exist on a current system. If the task is absent, the change has no effect.
