ProgramDataUpdater
ProgramDataUpdater is part of the Windows application-compatibility infrastructure.
since 0.9.8.11
Purpose
Identifier: \Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience\ProgramDataUpdater
Setup Foundry disables this scheduled task; it remains registered, but its triggers no longer start it.
ProgramDataUpdater is part of the Windows application-compatibility infrastructure. The task initiates an inventory of installed applications and other system components. The resulting information can help Windows and Microsoft identify compatibility problems and assess whether applications, drivers, and devices are ready for Windows updates.
Its configured action and triggers vary between Windows releases. Older versions describe the task as collecting program telemetry for the Customer Experience Improvement Program, while newer versions of Windows may use different components and diagnostic models for inventory and compatibility assessment.
Notes
Additional effects
The task refreshes information that can be used for compatibility diagnostics and update-readiness assessments. It is not the runtime mechanism that applies compatibility modes or application fixes. Disabling it therefore does not remove the Windows application compatibility database or previously applied compatibility settings.
Other Windows components can continue to collect their own inventory or diagnostic data. Disabling ProgramDataUpdater does not disable the Program Compatibility Assistant or Windows diagnostic-data transmission as a whole.
Privacy and security
The associated Inventory Collector can gather information about applications, files, devices, and drivers. Depending on the Windows version and configuration, this can include application and driver names and versions, publishers, installation details, and compatibility or update-readiness results. Microsoft uses this type of inventory data to diagnose compatibility issues and improve Windows.
Once the task is disabled, it no longer starts its collection pass automatically. Data generated or refreshed specifically by that pass is therefore no longer updated on its schedule. Existing data is not deleted, and the change does not prevent other Windows components from collecting or sending diagnostic data. The exact data processed and transmitted remains subject to the Windows version, diagnostic-data settings, and device configuration.
Effects of the change
The task remains registered in Task Scheduler, but its time-based or event-based triggers no longer launch it. Merely disabling the task does not necessarily terminate an instance that is already running.
Installed applications continue to launch, and existing compatibility fixes remain available. Users should therefore not normally lose an immediate application feature or see a specific error message solely because this task is disabled. However, the software inventory and compatibility information maintained through this task can become outdated. Windows and Microsoft may consequently receive less current information for compatibility diagnostics or update-readiness assessment. This does not establish that Windows updates will be blocked or installed without compatibility checks, because Windows uses additional components and data sources for those decisions.
File, processor, and possible network activity attributable to this task no longer occurs at its scheduled times. This does not guarantee a noticeable or persistent improvement in overall system performance.
Notes
ProgramDataUpdater is a version-dependent Windows system task.
