Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser

Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser examines the device hardware and installed applications and drivers for compatibility with Windows feature updates.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Identifier: \Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience\Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser

Setup Foundry disables this scheduled task; the task remains installed, but its triggers no longer start it.

Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser examines the device hardware and installed applications and drivers for compatibility with Windows feature updates. When a scheduled run occurs, the task starts the Windows compatibility appraiser and refreshes compatibility information stored in locations including the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags registry subtree.

Its findings can identify unsupported hardware, incompatible drivers, applications with known upgrade issues, and other conditions that may block an update.

Notes

Additional effects

Windows Setup, Windows Update, and enterprise management tools use the stored compatibility intelligence to assess whether a device is ready for a target Windows release. This information can be used to offer or defer a feature update or to report a compatibility issue without first attempting a complete upgrade.

The appraiser is not the only source of this information. Windows Setup and Dynamic Update processes can perform their own compatibility scans and refresh the results when an upgrade is actually attempted.

Privacy and security

The appraiser processes information about the device, applications, and drivers. Microsoft documents Appraiser diagnostic events that can contain processor and memory details, device and driver-package information, metadata for certain application files, detected compatibility blocks, and identifiers such as a hardware ID or IDs calculated from hardware characteristics. Microsoft uses this data for compatibility decisions and to help keep Windows up to date.

Disabling the task prevents Appraiser runs initiated by its scheduled triggers. Those occasions therefore produce neither fresh local assessment results nor the associated Appraiser events. Existing results are not deleted. The change also does not disable Windows diagnostic data collection as a whole or prevent compatibility scans started independently by Windows Setup, Dynamic Update, or other components.

Effects of the change

The task remains present in Task Scheduler, but its time- or event-based triggers no longer launch it. Installed applications, drivers, and ordinary Windows sessions are not directly disabled.

Without the scheduled Appraiser runs, locally stored compatibility intelligence can become stale. Hardware, firmware, driver, or application changes might not be reflected until another compatibility scan occurs. Windows Update may consequently take longer to refresh a feature-update eligibility message or may temporarily display a result based on an earlier assessment. The same limitation can affect enterprise tools that consume update-readiness information.

Disabling this task does not bypass hardware requirements, compatibility blocks, or safeguard holds for feature updates. If an upgrade is started, Windows Setup can still perform a separate compatibility scan, report incompatible components, and block the upgrade when necessary.

The processor, storage, and diagnostic activity associated with the scheduled runs no longer occurs at those times. This does not establish a general or permanent performance improvement: the task does not run continuously, and other Windows components can still initiate compatibility assessments.

Notes

The configured triggers and individual diagnostic fields can vary between Windows releases. This scheduled task is distinct from similarly named services and from compatibility scans performed within Windows Setup itself.
