Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft Copilot is the packaged Windows client for Microsoft’s cloud-based AI assistant.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Identifier: Microsoft.Copilot

Setup Foundry removes the app package from existing user accounts and from provisioning for new accounts.

Microsoft Copilot is the packaged Windows client for Microsoft’s cloud-based AI assistant. It provides a standalone interface for conversations and can answer questions, use information from the web, and generate text or images. Available capabilities vary with the app version, account, subscription, and Microsoft’s staged feature rollouts.

The Windows app also provides PC-specific features. These include Copilot Vision for screen content that the user shares, searching and reading supported local or OneDrive-synchronized files, submitting screenshots, and guidance for Windows settings. Access to files, windows, or other information on the device is subject to the relevant permissions.

Notes

Additional effects

The app can be the target of the Copilot key, the Windows+C shortcut, a configured pen button, and the optional “Hey Copilot” wake word. These entry points do not provide an independent Copilot implementation; they launch the installed app or an associated compact view.

The Microsoft.Copilot package identifies the standalone Copilot app. Copilot features built into Microsoft Edge, Microsoft 365 applications, or other Microsoft products are separate and are not uninstalled with this package.

Privacy and security

When the app is used, prompts, responses, and content deliberately supplied by the user are processed by Microsoft’s online service. Depending on the enabled feature, this content can include voice input, screenshots, shared windows, web content, or selected files. The current app can also associate chat history, saved memories, and other personalization data with the signed-in Microsoft account. Microsoft documents separate privacy controls and different data protections for personal accounts and organizational Microsoft Entra accounts.

For the updated app released from August 2026, Microsoft states that prompts, responses, and file contents are not used to train foundation models. Some privacy terms for earlier app versions differ.

Removing the package prevents this Windows app from sending new conversations or shared PC content to Copilot. It does not delete chats, memories, or other server-side information already stored with the Microsoft account. Data can also continue to flow through the Copilot website or any other Copilot experiences that remain installed or accessible.

Effects of the change

The Copilot app is no longer available to existing users and is not automatically registered from device provisioning for newly created accounts. Its standalone interface and Windows-specific capabilities—including Copilot Vision, file search, screenshot sharing, the in-app web view, and voice activation—are therefore unavailable on this PC.

A Copilot key, Windows+C, or another shortcut explicitly assigned to this app can no longer open it. The precise behavior of the key depends on the Windows version and its current mapping.

Removing the package does not disable the Copilot website or remove Copilot features from Edge, Microsoft 365, or other applications. It also does not erase Copilot activity stored in the user’s Microsoft account. The app can be installed again from Microsoft Store later if Microsoft continues to offer it there.

Notes

Microsoft now uses the name “Microsoft Copilot” for several experiences. This article applies only to the Microsoft.Copilot app package, which Microsoft’s Windows management documentation identifies as the standalone Copilot app or consumer experience. Other similarly named packages and integrated Copilot features are outside the scope of this change.
