Microsoft News

Microsoft News is the Windows app for the MSN news service.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Identifier: microsoft.bingnews

Setup Foundry removes this app package by default for existing user accounts and from provisioning for new accounts.

Microsoft News is the Windows app for the MSN news service. It retrieves news stories, images, and videos from Microsoft and publishers represented on MSN, then presents them in a feed organized by topic, region, and selected sources.

Users can follow or block topics and publishers. When a Microsoft account is used, these preferences can be synchronized across the MSN website and MSN apps. The package can also retrieve content in the background before the app is opened.

Notes

Privacy and security

MSN collects information about how the service is used, including usage frequency and viewed content, to tailor the news feed. When the user is signed in, interests, preferred publishers, and other personalization settings can be associated with the Microsoft account and synchronized across devices. An approximate location may also be used to provide local content.

After removal, the app itself can no longer retrieve news, send its usage data to MSN, or receive app notifications. Removing the package does not erase MSN preferences already stored with a Microsoft account, nor does it prevent access to MSN through a browser, Microsoft Edge, or other Microsoft features.

Effects of the change

The Microsoft News app and its Start menu entry are no longer available to existing user accounts. Its news feed, locally held app settings, and any notifications enabled for the app can no longer be used on the device. New user accounts do not receive the provisioned package automatically.

The removal is limited to the microsoft.bingnews package. The MSN website remains accessible in a browser. News and interests on Windows 10 and the Widgets or Discover board on Windows 11 are separate Windows experiences and are not automatically disabled by removal of this package. Ordinary web links remain associated with the configured browser.

Microsoft News can be installed again from Microsoft Store for as long as Microsoft continues to offer it there.

Notes

Microsoft identifies the same package as Microsoft.BingNews in its Windows documentation. The capitalization differs from the technical identifier used here, but both refer to the same app package.
