This per-user policy setting controls whether Microsoft Project can use Trusted Locations hosted on network shares or other remote locations.
When the policy is enabled, network locations that have been designated as trusted can be honored. The setting does not designate a Trusted Location by itself. When the policy is disabled, Project ignores network-based Trusted Locations, including locations defined through other policies.
Notes
Additional effects
Files opened from an effective Trusted Location bypass file validation and File Block checks. They also do not open in Protected View or Application Guard. Active content, including VBA macros, add-ins, and external data connections, can be enabled without the security warnings that would otherwise apply.
This setting does not grant access to files, folders, or network shares. The user must still have the required access permissions.
Security
Allowing network-based Trusted Locations expands the set of locations from which Project files can open with reduced security checks. If an unauthorized party can add files to a trusted network folder or modify existing files, a tampered file could run active content without the protections or warnings normally applied when the file is opened.
The resulting exposure therefore depends substantially on the share and file permissions protecting the network location. Microsoft recommends disabling this policy and permitting exceptions only for selected users when necessary.
Notes
Microsoft provides Trusted Locations policies for Project even though Project does not expose Trusted Locations settings in its Trust Center user interface. Project and Visio also have no default Trusted Locations.
Web folders are recognized as Trusted Locations only when they support WebDAV or the FrontPage Server Extensions Remote Procedure Call (FPRPC) protocol.
