This per-user policy value determines whether PowerPoint files opened as Outlook attachments start in Protected View.
The value uses the REG_DWORD data type:
1: PowerPoint opens the affected Outlook attachments outside Protected View.0: PowerPoint opens the attachments in Protected View.- If the value is absent, the policy is not configured and Outlook attachments open in Protected View.
Protected View is a restricted, read-only mode in which most editing functions are disabled. It allows users to inspect potentially unsafe files without immediately opening them in the normal editing environment.
Notes
Security
A value of 1 removes the Protected View behavior imposed by this setting for PowerPoint attachments opened from Outlook. This eliminates a protection layer intended to reduce the risks posed by malicious or compromised email attachments. The file is processed outside the restricted, read-only environment, increasing the potential impact of PowerPoint vulnerabilities or harmful file content on the user account and computer.
This setting does not automatically enable macros or all other active content. Macros, OLE content, File Block, file validation, and other Trust Center features remain subject to their own settings. A file can also enter Protected View or another protected environment for an independent reason.
Possible side effects
With a value of 1, functions restricted by Protected View become available immediately unless another policy blocks them. These can include editing, saving, printing, and some add-in functionality.
With a value of 0, or when the value is absent, the attachment initially opens read-only in Protected View. Editing-dependent functions are unavailable or restricted until the file leaves that mode, and add-ins can behave differently.
Notes
The value applies to the current user and to PowerPoint only. It does not change the general handling of Outlook attachments opened in Word, Excel, or other applications.
