This setting controls the Internet Explorer feature control FEATURE_OBJECT_CACHING for each named Office application. The protection prevents web content processed by the application from accessing or instantiating cached ActiveX controls originating from a different domain or security context.

When navigation changes the security context, object references created for the previous context are no longer available to subsequent content. This also covers relevant context changes caused by navigation within the same domain.

Each listed executable has a separate REG_DWORD value. A value of 1 enables the protection for that process, while 0 disables it. The executable-specific values operate independently.

Notes

Security

The protection restricts the reuse of scriptable ActiveX objects across domain and security-context boundaries. Without it, web content could attempt to access or instantiate a control retained from an earlier context, weakening the isolation between content with different trust levels.

This setting does not block ActiveX controls in general. It does not replace ActiveX installation restrictions or other security-zone, content, and permission checks.

Possible side effects

Legacy Office extensions or document-based applications that host HTML and ActiveX content may rely on an object reference surviving navigation or a security-context change. Such integrations can stop working as expected or may need to create the object again.

Notes

The setting affects only processes for which a corresponding executable value is evaluated under the specified key. It does not control the Office Document Cache, the HTTP cache, or the file cache. In this context, object caching refers specifically to the reuse of ActiveX objects through the legacy Internet Explorer web and ActiveX infrastructure.
