Turn off display of recent search entries in the File Explorer search box
This policy prevents File Explorer from displaying suggestions based on previous queries while a user types in its search box.
since 0.9.8.11
Purpose
Show registry keys (1)
HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\DisableSearchBoxSuggestions
This policy prevents File Explorer from displaying suggestions based on previous queries while a user types in its search box. New search-box entries are also prevented from being stored in the registry for later use.
File Explorer search remains available. The policy does not restrict searchable locations, alter search results, or change permissions for files and folders.
Notes
Security
Preventing search terms from being retained and presented as suggestions reduces locally visible traces of File Explorer searches. This can limit accidental disclosure of earlier queries to another person using the same user account or an already open session.
This setting is not an access-control or auditing policy. It does not protect files or folders and does not disable other forms of search history or activity recording.
Possible side effects
Users can no longer select previous File Explorer queries from the suggestion list and must re-enter recurring search terms.
Notes
This is a per-user, ADMX-backed policy defined by WindowsExplorer.admx. When a user enters a search property, File Explorer can still display values matching that property. Those values are not saved for later use or presented again during a subsequent search.
