Turn off Windows Copilot

This per-user policy value controls the original Copilot in Windows experience integrated into the Windows shell.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Show registry keys (1)
  • HKCU\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsCopilot\TurnOffWindowsCopilot

This per-user policy value controls the original Copilot in Windows experience integrated into the Windows shell.

The value uses the REG_DWORD data type:

  • 1 turns off Windows Copilot for the affected user. Copilot can't be used, and its icon isn't shown on the taskbar.
  • 0 or an absent value doesn't enforce the restriction. The user can use Windows Copilot when the feature is available to them.

Notes

Additional effects

During certain Windows upgrade scenarios, the enabled policy also prevents installation of the Microsoft Copilot app from a Windows image that would previously have provided the Copilot in Windows pane.

Notes

This is a user-scoped legacy policy. Microsoft has deprecated it and states that it might be removed in a future release.

TurnOffWindowsCopilot doesn't control the newer Microsoft Copilot app or the updated Copilot experience that replaces the original Copilot in Windows pane. The value therefore shouldn't be treated as a general block for every current or future Copilot offering.

Microsoft documents the policy for specific Windows 10 releases starting with build 10.0.19044.3758 or 10.0.19045.3758, and for Windows 11, version 22H2 starting with build 10.0.22621.2361 and version 23H2.
