Turn off the advertising ID
This device-level policy value turns off the Windows advertising ID.
since 0.9.8.11
Purpose
Show registry keys (1)
HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\AdvertisingInfo\DisabledByGroupPolicy
This device-level policy value turns off the Windows advertising ID. Apps can no longer use the identifier for advertising and other personalized experiences across apps. Windows APIs that normally expose the advertising ID return an empty string while the feature is turned off.
DisabledByGroupPolicy is a REG_DWORD value. A value of 1 enables the policy effect and turns off the advertising ID. When the value is 0, or the policy is not configured, users can control whether apps may use the advertising ID.
Notes
Security
Turning off the advertising ID limits the ability to correlate a user's activity across apps through the shared Windows advertising identifier. It does not prevent every form of personalized advertising or tracking. Cookies, application-specific identifiers, and other mechanisms used by Microsoft or third parties are outside the scope of this setting.
Possible side effects
Apps and advertising networks can no longer use the Windows advertising ID for personalization. As a result, advertisements and other app experiences may be less relevant to the individual user. The setting does not necessarily reduce the number of advertisements displayed.
Notes
This is a device-scoped setting mapped to the Group Policy under Computer Configuration > System > User Profiles.
