Documentation

Require a password when a computer wakes (on battery)

This machine-wide registry value determines whether Windows returns to the secure desktop and requires the user to sign in again when the computer resumes from sleep while running on battery power.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Show registry keys (1)
  • HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Power\PowerSettings\0e796bdb-100d-47d6-a2d5-f7d2daa51f51\DCSettingIndex

This machine-wide registry value determines whether Windows returns to the secure desktop and requires the user to sign in again when the computer resumes from sleep while running on battery power.

The value uses the REG_DWORD data type:

  • 1: Windows returns to the secure desktop after resuming, and the user must authenticate again.
  • 0: Windows returns to the existing desktop session without requiring authentication again.

Notes

Security

A value of 1 prevents someone from gaining immediate access to an already signed-in session simply by waking the computer.

With a value of 0, this protection is removed. A person with physical access to a computer that was only put to sleep can resume and use the existing session without signing in again. The setting does not grant account privileges, file permissions, or administrative rights.

Notes

DCSettingIndex applies only while the computer is running on battery power. The corresponding behavior while plugged in is controlled separately by ACSettingIndex under the same registry key.

If DCSettingIndex is absent, this registry value does not impose a policy override.
