This policy controls Internet Explorer's Pop-up Blocker for websites in the Internet zone. Registry value 1809 is a REG_DWORD value.
When the policy is enabled, Internet Explorer prevents most unwanted pop-up windows from appearing. Pop-ups opened as a direct result of the user clicking a link are still allowed.
When the policy is disabled, this setting does not prevent pop-up windows from appearing. If the policy is not configured, the documented default behavior also blocks most unwanted pop-ups.
Notes
Security
Blocking automatically generated pop-ups reduces exposure to unwanted or deceptive web content. It is not a general malware-protection mechanism and does not evaluate whether a website or its content is trustworthy. In particular, it does not block a pop-up opened as a direct result of a user click.
Possible side effects
Web applications that depend on pop-up windows not directly initiated by the user—for example, for sign-in flows, dialog boxes, or subsequent workflow steps—may not work completely. Windows explicitly opened by the user through a link are not subject to this restriction.
Notes
The Zones\3 key represents the Internet zone. This policy applies only to that zone and does not control pop-up blocking in other browsers. The HKLM and HKCU paths represent the computer and user scopes of the ADMX-backed policy, respectively.
