This policy controls whether Internet Explorer processes display the Notification bar when an Internet Explorer security feature restricts a file or code installation.
Enabling the policy displays the Notification bar. Disabling it suppresses the bar when such a restriction occurs. If the policy is not configured, the bar is displayed by default.
The explorer.exe and iexplore.exe values bring the corresponding processes under the FEATURE_SECURITYBAND feature control. Microsoft does not document a separate user-facing function for the additional (Reserved) value created by the administrative template.
Notes
Security
This policy changes only the visibility of the Notification bar. It does not remove the underlying file or code-installation restrictions, nor does it independently authorize a download or the installation or execution of code.
For some related Internet Explorer security settings, the Notification bar can expose an available user action, such as requesting an ActiveX installation prompt that was initially blocked. Whether that action is permitted remains subject to the applicable security and zone policies.
Possible side effects
When the Notification bar is hidden, users may receive no immediate visible explanation for a blocked file or installation operation. Any user action that would otherwise be offered through the bar is also unavailable, while the underlying restriction remains in effect.
Notes
This setting is separate from policies that control automatic download or ActiveX prompts and from policies that allow or block the underlying operation. Its scope is limited to the Notification bar for the specified Internet Explorer processes.
The administrative template supports both computer and user configuration. The corresponding values can therefore appear under either HKLM or HKCU.
