Turn off Internet File Association service

This policy controls whether Windows offers the Microsoft web service for finding a suitable application when a file-name extension has no existing association.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Show registry keys (1)
  • HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoInternetOpenWith

This policy controls whether Windows offers the Microsoft web service for finding a suitable application when a file-name extension has no existing association.

When the policy is enabled, Windows removes the link and dialog for searching through this web service. Users can still select an application that is available locally.

When the policy is disabled or not configured, users are allowed to use the web service to search for an application.

Notes

Possible side effects

Users can no longer use the Internet File Association service to find an application for an unknown file-name extension. If no suitable application is installed or otherwise known, they must identify an appropriate local application themselves.

Notes

This is the computer-scoped variant of the policy and applies to users of the affected computer.

The setting controls the Microsoft web service for file associations. It is distinct from the separate policy that controls whether the Open With dialog can search for an app in the Microsoft Store.
