Turn off Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program

This policy value controls participation of the entire computer in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP).

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Show registry keys (1)
  • HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\CEIPEnable

This policy value controls participation of the entire computer in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP). CEIP collects information about hardware configuration and the use of Windows, software, and services so that Microsoft can analyze usage and reliability patterns.

The value uses the REG_DWORD data type:

  • 0 disables CEIP and opts all users of the computer out of the program.
  • 1 enables CEIP and opts all users of the computer into the program.

The policy display name is phrased negatively: enabling the “Turn off Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program” policy corresponds to the value 0.

Notes

Security

A value of 0 disables the CEIP-specific collection and transmission of hardware configuration and product usage information. This prevents those usage and configuration data from leaving the computer as part of CEIP.

A value of 1 permits CEIP data collection for every user of the computer. Microsoft states that CEIP does not collect names, addresses, or other directly personally identifiable information. The technical and usage information it does collect may nevertheless be relevant to organizations with privacy or data-transfer requirements.

Notes

This is a device-scoped, ADMX-backed policy defined by ICM.admx. The value controls only the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program. It does not necessarily disable other Windows diagnostic data, telemetry, error-reporting, or feedback features, which are governed by separate settings.

When the policy is not configured and therefore does not prescribe this policy value, CEIP participation is determined by the otherwise applicable Windows behavior.
