This machine policy limits optional Windows diagnostic data sent to Microsoft to the events intended for Desktop Analytics. A value of 1 enables the limitation; a value of 0 disables it.
The limiting behavior applies only in conjunction with a diagnostic data policy that permits optional diagnostic data. The policies that limit dump collection and diagnostic log collection must also be in effect. With this combination, collection is restricted to required diagnostic data and the events needed by Desktop Analytics.
This setting neither selects the overall diagnostic data level nor enables data transmission by itself. When it is disabled or not configured, collection is governed by the “Allow Diagnostic Data” policy or, where that policy leaves the choice available, by the end user’s setting.
Notes
Security
The policy provides data minimization when optional diagnostic data is otherwise permitted. It does not stop all transmission to Microsoft: required diagnostic data and the events designated for Desktop Analytics remain within the collected data set.
Without the separate limitations on dump and diagnostic log collection, those additional data types may still be collected according to the applicable diagnostic data settings. This policy does not change user rights, file permissions, or local access controls.
Notes
Desktop Analytics was retired on November 30, 2022. The policy remains documented in the Windows policy reference, but the cloud service for which it was designed is no longer available.
