Disable OneSettings Downloads

This machine-wide registry value controls whether Windows connects to the OneSettings service.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Show registry keys (1)
  • HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DataCollection\DisableOneSettingsDownloads

This machine-wide registry value controls whether Windows connects to the OneSettings service. OneSettings is part of Windows Services Configuration, which allows Windows components and apps to update their configuration dynamically.

The value uses the REG_DWORD type. A value of 1 prevents Windows from attempting to contact the OneSettings service and therefore stops configuration settings from being downloaded through it. With a value of 0, or when the value is absent, Windows periodically attempts to connect to the service and retrieve configuration settings.

Notes

Security

The value suppresses connections made specifically for OneSettings and can therefore limit data exchanged with that Microsoft service. It does not generally disable diagnostic data transmission or other connections between Windows and Microsoft services. It also does not change permissions assigned to users, services, or applications.

Possible side effects

Windows components and apps that rely on OneSettings no longer receive dynamic configuration changes through the service. Microsoft notes that applications using Windows Services Configuration might stop working correctly when the service is turned off. The documentation does not identify every affected component.

The setting is also incompatible with Windows Update for Business reports. Microsoft's configuration script treats an enabled DisableOneSettingsDownloads policy as a configuration error; consequently, device data might not appear correctly in those reports.

Notes

The value applies at device scope. Microsoft defines 1 as disabled and 0 as not disabled. The current System Policy CSP reference lists the setting for Windows 11, version 21H2 and later.
