Allow device name to be sent in Windows diagnostic data
This `REG_DWORD` value controls whether Windows may include the device name in Windows diagnostic data sent to Microsoft.
since 0.9.8.11
Purpose
Show registry keys (1)
HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DataCollection\AllowDeviceNameInTelemetry
This REG_DWORD value controls whether Windows may include the device name in Windows diagnostic data sent to Microsoft.
A value of 1 permits the device name to be sent. When the value is 0 or is absent, Windows does not include the device name in diagnostic data. This setting neither enables diagnostic data collection nor changes the configured diagnostic data level; it has an effect only when the device sends Windows diagnostic data under other applicable settings.
Notes
Additional effects
Services that process Windows diagnostic data can display the transmitted device name. In particular, Windows Update for Business reports requires this permission to show devices by name. If the device name is not included, the reports may display # instead.
Security
Enabling the value adds the user- or organization-assigned device name to the diagnostic data transferred to Microsoft. Consequently, any information encoded in the organization’s device-naming convention also becomes part of that diagnostic data.
The setting does not grant local privileges, modify access permissions, or provide additional access to the device.
Notes
Microsoft documentation identifies the corresponding Windows policy and MDM setting as AllowDeviceNameInDiagnosticData, while the underlying registry value is named AllowDeviceNameInTelemetry.
