Documentation

Do not show Windows tips

This machine-wide value determines whether Windows can display contextual Windows Tips, also referred to as the “soft landing” experience.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Show registry keys (1)
  • HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\CloudContent\DisableSoftLanding

This machine-wide value determines whether Windows can display contextual Windows Tips, also referred to as the “soft landing” experience. These pop-ups introduce Windows features and explain how to use them.

DisableSoftLanding is a REG_DWORD value:

  • 1 prevents Windows Tips from being shown.
  • 0 permits Windows Tips.
  • If the value is absent, the corresponding policy is not configured and Windows Tips may appear.

Notes

Possible side effects

Users no longer receive contextual guidance that introduces Windows features or explains how they work.

Notes

The value implements the machine policy DisableSoftLanding defined in CloudContent.admx. Its scope is limited to Windows Tips. Separate policies control other Cloud Content and Windows spotlight experiences, including the Windows welcome experience, suggestions in Settings, and lock-screen content.

This value does not reduce diagnostic-data collection or disable every personalized or cloud-delivered Windows experience.

The CSP and registry value use opposite value semantics: 0 disables tips in AllowWindowsTips, whereas 1 suppresses tips in the mapped DisableSoftLanding registry value described here.
