Turn off Application Telemetry

This machine-wide policy value controls the Windows Application Telemetry engine.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Show registry keys (1)
  • HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\AppCompat\AITEnable

This machine-wide policy value controls the Windows Application Telemetry engine. Application Telemetry records how applications use certain Windows system components. Microsoft characterizes the collected usage information as anonymous.

When the associated policy is in effect, Windows stops collecting this usage data. The setting controls Application Telemetry specifically; it does not turn off the application compatibility engine itself.

Notes

Security

Turning off this mechanism limits the processing of usage data collected by Application Telemetry. Its documented scope is restricted to this particular telemetry mechanism. It does not constitute a general switch for all Windows diagnostic data, Windows Error Reporting, or telemetry implemented independently by an application.

Notes

The change applies to applications launched after it takes effect. Restarting Windows ensures that telemetry collection has also stopped for applications that were already running.

If the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program is turned off, Application Telemetry remains off regardless of this policy value.

Other application compatibility components, including the application compatibility engine and Inventory Collector, are controlled by separate policies.
