HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsAI\DisableAIDataAnalysis
The DisableAIDataAnalysis DWORD value maps to the Windows policy that controls whether Recall can save screen snapshots. A value of 1 prevents Recall from saving new snapshots. Any Recall snapshots previously stored on the device are deleted when the policy takes effect.
Without saved snapshots, Recall cannot provide its snapshot-based timeline or content search across text and images previously displayed on the screen. This setting does not necessarily disable or remove the Recall optional component itself; a separate policy controls the component's availability.
Notes
Security
This setting prevents Recall from building an ongoing local history of visible screen content and removes existing Recall snapshots. Consequently, that content is no longer available for local analysis by Recall.
Its effect is limited to Recall's snapshot feature. It does not prevent other applications or Windows features from capturing the screen, nor does it disable data processing by every other AI feature.
Possible side effects
Users cannot use Recall to search for previously viewed content through saved screen snapshots. Deletion of existing Recall snapshots also removes the user's prior Recall history.
Notes
Despite its broadly worded technical name, DisableAIDataAnalysis is not a system-wide switch for all AI data analysis in Windows. Microsoft specifically maps the value to the policy governing the saving of Recall snapshots.
This registry entry applies the setting at device scope through HKLM. Recall itself requires a compatible Copilot+ PC.
