Configure Microsoft Defender SmartScreen to block potentially unwanted apps

This registry value enables Microsoft Defender SmartScreen protection against potentially unwanted apps (PUAs) in Microsoft Edge.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Show registry keys (1)
  • HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Edge\SmartScreenPuaEnabled

This registry value enables Microsoft Defender SmartScreen protection against potentially unwanted apps (PUAs) in Microsoft Edge. When the DWORD value is set to 1, Edge warns about relevant downloads and blocks downloads and associated resource URLs that SmartScreen identifies as potentially unwanted.

Potentially unwanted apps are not necessarily malware. They can include adware, coin miners, bundled software, and other applications with a poor reputation.

Notes

Security

This setting reduces the risk of users downloading potentially unwanted software or accessing associated resources through Microsoft Edge. Such software might display unwanted advertising, install additional programs, consume system resources, or increase the likelihood of a subsequent malware infection.

The value controls only PUA protection in Microsoft Edge. It does not enable Microsoft Defender Antivirus PUA protection and does not replace the general Edge policy SmartScreenEnabled.

Possible side effects

Downloads or resource URLs can be blocked even when the application is required for a particular business purpose. This can especially affect software with limited prevalence or reputation and installation packages containing bundled applications.

Notes

The policy is supported by Microsoft Edge on Windows starting with version 80. It applies at the device level and is not limited to individual Edge profiles. Microsoft Defender SmartScreen must be available and enabled in Edge for the protection to take effect.
