Disable location for this user

The catalog entry writes `0` to the per-user `LocationEnabled` DWORD value with the intention of turning off location access for the current user.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Show registry keys (1)
  • HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\LocationAndSensors\LocationEnabled

The catalog entry writes 0 to the per-user LocationEnabled DWORD value with the intention of turning off location access for the current user.

Microsoft does not document this registry value as a supported interface for the current location settings in Windows 10 or Windows 11. In particular, there is no official confirmation that 0 corresponds to the “Let apps access your location” setting on every supported Windows version. Writing this value may therefore have version-dependent behavior or no effect.

If a Windows version interprets the value as disabling per-user location access, apps do not receive location information through the Windows location service. Device-wide location services and the preferences of other user accounts remain separate controls.

Notes

Security

When the per-user location control is effectively disabled, it reduces the disclosure of precise location information through the Windows location service. It does not prevent software from estimating location without that service. Depending on their implementation, desktop applications and services may use information such as IP addresses, Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth, or cellular connections.

Windows may attempt to determine and share precise location during an emergency call regardless of the location settings. A cellular operator may also continue to have access to location information.

Possible side effects

Apps and Windows features that depend on location data may lose location-aware functionality or return less useful results. Microsoft also notes that some apps may be unable to access certain Wi-Fi network information when location services are disabled.

Notes

This value is not a documented Group Policy value. It must not be confused with the “Turn off location” policy or with HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\LocationAndSensors\DisableLocation. That documented policy has device scope, whereas the value described here resides in the individual user’s HKCU profile.

Because Microsoft does not publish the meaning of LocationEnabled at this path or identify supported Windows versions, this registry entry alone cannot be relied upon to disable location.
