DisableAIDataAnalysis is the registry value associated with the Windows policy that prevents Recall snapshots from being saved. When a DWORD value of 1 is effective in a Microsoft-supported user or device policy scope, Recall stops saving new snapshots of the screen. Windows also deletes previously saved Recall snapshots.
The policy therefore prevents Recall from building the visual history that it analyzes and searches locally. It does not remove the optional Recall component or disable Windows AI features in general.
Notes
Security
An effective policy prevents Recall from retaining additional screen activity and removes existing snapshots. Those records are consequently no longer available as a locally searchable history or for viewing through Recall.
Despite its technical name, DisableAIDataAnalysis is not a general switch for every form of AI-based data analysis. Its documented effect is limited to saving snapshots for Recall.
Possible side effects
After existing snapshots are deleted, Recall can no longer find content contained in that earlier screen history. No further Recall history is created while snapshot saving remains disabled. Other Recall settings and the Recall component itself can remain present.
Notes
The specified HKU\.DEFAULT path is neither the profile hive of an interactively signed-in user nor the profile template stored in C:\Users\Default\NTUSER.DAT. Microsoft documents this policy for user and device scopes. The per-user value belongs to the affected user's registry hive, exposed as HKEY_CURRENT_USER while that user is signed in; the device-scoped form uses the corresponding policy path under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Microsoft does not document the value at the path shown here as being inherited by new user profiles or as controlling Recall for regular signed-in users. It therefore cannot reliably be treated as a “default user profile” policy.
Microsoft lists the corresponding policy as supported on Windows 11, version 24H2 with KB5055627, build 26100.3915, and later. Recall itself applies to Copilot+ PCs.
