Turn off saving snapshots for use with Recall

When this `DWORD` value is set to `1`, Windows prevents Recall from saving periodic screen snapshots for the affected user.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Show registry keys (1)
  • HKCU\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsAI\DisableAIDataAnalysis

When this DWORD value is set to 1, Windows prevents Recall from saving periodic screen snapshots for the affected user. Recall builds its timeline and search capabilities from snapshots that are stored and analyzed locally, so no new searchable Recall history is created for that user.

Despite the technical value name DisableAIDataAnalysis, Microsoft documents this setting specifically as a control for saving Recall snapshots. It does not disable every AI analysis capability or all Windows AI features.

Notes

Additional effects

Any Recall snapshots previously saved for the user on the device are deleted when the setting takes effect.

Security

Preventing new snapshots and deleting existing Recall data reduces the amount of screen content retained in the local Recall database and available through Recall search. This can include content displayed in applications, documents, and websites.

This setting is not a system-wide screen-capture restriction and does not automatically disable unrelated Windows AI features.

Possible side effects

The user can no longer use Recall to find previously viewed content through saved screen snapshots. Because existing snapshots are deleted, the user's previous Recall timeline is no longer available.

Notes

The HKCU path represents the user-scope form of the policy. It applies to the individual user and is distinct from the device-scope value under HKLM.

This setting does not remove the optional Recall component. Component availability is controlled separately by the Allow Recall to be enabled policy.

Microsoft lists this policy as applicable to Windows 11, version 24H2, with KB5055627 or OS build 26100.3915 and later. Recall itself requires a compatible Copilot+ PC.
