Disable preinstalled consumer apps

The `PreInstalledAppsEnabled` DWORD with value data `0` disables automatic content-delivery downloads performed by Windows Content Delivery Manager.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Show registry keys (1)
  • HKU\.DEFAULT\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ContentDeliveryManager\PreInstalledAppsEnabled

The PreInstalledAppsEnabled DWORD with value data 0 disables automatic content-delivery downloads performed by Windows Content Delivery Manager. Microsoft documents this behavior for the per-user value under HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ContentDeliveryManager.

This setting does not prevent manual app installation, disable Microsoft Store, or remove apps that have already been provisioned or registered for a user. Automatic Microsoft Store app updates are controlled by a separate policy value.

Notes

Possible side effects

Apps or other content that depend on automatic content delivery might not become available automatically to the affected user.

Notes

The specified location under HKU\.DEFAULT differs from the per-user HKCU location documented by Microsoft. In addition, HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT is not the template for newly created user profiles. The Windows default user profile is stored in C:\Users\Default\NTUSER.DAT and must be loaded as a separate registry hive.

It is therefore not established that placing this value at the literal HKU\.DEFAULT path applies it to signed-in or newly created users. The available Microsoft documentation confirms the behavior only within the relevant user profile under HKCU.
