Disable SCOOBE post-update prompts

`ScoobeSystemSettingEnabled` is a per-user `DWORD` value associated with the Second Chance Out of Box Experience (SCOOBE).

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Show registry keys (1)
  • HKU\.DEFAULT\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UserProfileEngagement\ScoobeSystemSettingEnabled

ScoobeSystemSettingEnabled is a per-user DWORD value associated with the Second Chance Out of Box Experience (SCOOBE). SCOOBE can reappear after the initial Windows setup and prompt the user to finish setting up the device. Depending on the Windows version and device configuration, the experience can include Microsoft account sign-in and offers for additional Windows and Microsoft services.

A value of 0 marks this SCOOBE system setting as disabled. Windows should consequently stop presenting the affected user profile with the associated automatic prompts to finish device setup. The value does not disable Windows Update or the features offered through SCOOBE; those features generally remain available through their respective Windows settings.

Notes

Possible side effects

Users no longer receive the consolidated reminders and setup offers provided by SCOOBE. Optional features such as Microsoft account linking, certain backup or synchronization offers, and other Windows features presented after initial setup may therefore remain undiscovered or incomplete.

Notes

Microsoft documents this value as an optimization for the default user profile in Windows 10 and Windows 11 VDI images. It does not, however, publish a complete registry schema defining authoritative defaults or guaranteeing identical behavior across every Windows release.

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT is not the registry hive for the C:\Users\Default profile. The .DEFAULT hive belongs to the system's default environment and is not the template copied when Windows creates an ordinary user profile. For new users to inherit this setting, the value must actually be stored in the Windows default user profile hive. A value written only to the literal HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT path does not modify existing user profiles and should not be expected to control their SCOOBE behavior reliably.
