Disable Internet Explorer 11 Launch Via COM Automation

A DWORD value of `1` prevents Internet Explorer 11 from being launched through COM automation.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Show registry keys (1)
  • HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\DisableInternetExplorerLaunchViaCOM

A DWORD value of 1 prevents Internet Explorer 11 from being launched through COM automation. Applications and scripts can no longer create a new Internet Explorer instance through its automation interfaces.

This setting specifically governs COM-based launches. It is distinct from the policy that disables Internet Explorer 11 as a standalone browser: disabling the standalone browser by itself does not block Internet Explorer launches through COM automation.

Notes

Security

The setting closes a remaining launch path for Internet Explorer 11. Scripts and applications can no longer invoke Internet Explorer as an automatable browser process through COM.

It does not, by itself, disable every Internet Explorer component or Microsoft Edge's Internet Explorer mode. Its direct security effect is limited to preventing Internet Explorer 11 from being launched through COM automation.

Possible side effects

Legacy applications, scripts, or integrations that create and control Internet Explorer through COM can no longer perform those browser-dependent operations. Depending on the software's error handling, the operation might fail or the application might provide reduced functionality.

Notes

Microsoft documents this ADMX-backed setting for both device and user scope. The HKLM path shown here represents its computer-wide form.

Microsoft lists Windows 11, version 24H2, with KB5064081—OS build 10.0.26100.5074—or later as the applicable operating-system level. The linked documentation does not establish that this registry value is effective on earlier or unpatched systems.
