Windows Firewall: Private: Firewall state

The DWORD value `1` enables Windows Firewall and advanced security enforcement for the private network profile.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Show registry keys (1)
  • HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsFirewall\PrivateProfile\EnableFirewall

The DWORD value 1 enables Windows Firewall and advanced security enforcement for the private network profile. Windows filters traffic for this profile according to the effective firewall rules, connection security rules, and configured default actions for inbound and outbound connections.

This value enables rule enforcement; it does not by itself determine which connections are allowed or blocked. Those outcomes depend on the other settings and rules effective for the private profile.

Notes

Security

An enabled firewall can block unauthorized network traffic and reduce the computer's exposed attack surface on private networks. It does not guarantee that all inbound traffic is blocked: explicit allow rules and the configured default actions continue to control the result.

The value does not govern connections to which Windows has assigned the domain or public profile. Protection for those connections depends on their respective profile settings.

Possible side effects

Applications and services can lose network functionality when their connections are not permitted by the effective rules or default actions of the private profile. This can particularly affect inbound access to services hosted on the computer.

Notes

EnableFirewall has the REG_DWORD type. A value of 1 enables the firewall for the private profile; 0 disables filtering and advanced security enforcement for that profile.
