Location services

This string value (`REG_SZ`) controls location services at the device level.

since 0.9.8.11

Purpose

Show registry keys (1)
  • HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CapabilityAccessManager\ConsentStore\location\Value

This string value (REG_SZ) controls location services at the device level. Setting it to Deny turns off Windows access to the device’s location. Windows and applications consequently receive no device-location data through the Windows location service.

The setting applies to the computer and all user profiles. It is distinct from the separate policy that controls location access for individual Windows apps.

Notes

Additional effects

When device-level location services are off, users cannot restore access through a per-user app permission. Those permissions can take effect only while the device’s location service is available.

Security

Deny prevents location determination and delivery through the Windows location service. In particular, this restricts Windows components and applications that rely on Windows-managed location APIs.

It does not prevent every method of determining the device’s location. Third-party applications and services can still use other technologies, such as the IP address, Bluetooth, or a cellular modem, to estimate or determine location. Windows also attempts to determine and share precise location during an emergency call regardless of this setting.

Possible side effects

Windows features that depend on location information, including automatic time-zone detection and Find my device, might not work correctly while location services are off.

Mapping, weather, navigation, and other location-aware applications cannot obtain the device location through Windows. Applications that use certain Wi-Fi APIs capable of revealing location can also be restricted or behave unexpectedly.

Notes

The value Deny represents the off state of the location setting. A Group Policy or MDM policy can override this direct registry setting.
